Buffett can't save the banksters

4:06 am (Hawaii) No matter what "they" do, they can't save this market while it is still filled with toxins. Buffet has purchased, what, five or six billion dollars worth of BAC preferred shares. This prolongs the inevitable, but for now, that has most financials in green this morning. Yet, the indices have drifted from break even to negative. I have no hate for Buffett. In fact, I'll be thanking him maybe. FAZ is now down to 56+ and once it hits 55, it'll be at support. 55 is where FAZ drifts to before some Euro bank craps out a load of bad news once every two or three weeks.

Not planning to automatically buy FAZ at 55, but now that price is on the radar thanks to Buffett, I'm keeping a close eye on it.

Gold and silver are down again, and I don't even care what the spot price is. I'm all cash, saving in physical and not selling that. DZZ was at 4.90 or so after hours yesterday, was at 4.95 in premarket today, and has gone as high as 5.19 already. Now at 5.04.

DGP (60.87) and AGQ (206.09) are at attractive levels, but that's not enough for me to scale in yet. I'm content to wait through tomorrow's Jackson Hole bizness. The lack of stress from being untethered to this space alien machine market is refreshing.

Weekend cinema & library (Sun night update)

Maui Film Festival

12:53 pm (Hawaii) Mr. Obama isn't happy, not at all, with the posturing and grandstanding by both parties. Boehner walks, Obama calls the stubbornness "inexcusable" and the aftermarket is reacting. AAPL is down from 393+ to 391.00 in the past 30 minutes. AGQ has climbed from 215 to 217. DGP has climbed above 53 to 53.22. None of this is on huge volume; short-term traders made their adjustments.

Longer term, the deal gets done by those wacky politicos. Longest term, the dollar melts down to nothing, a new currency backed by some combination of commodities arises, and those long physical metal survive intact.

Oracle effect

Wells Fargo was told, supposedly, to clean up its balance sheet by the Fed. The stock rockets.

I don't get it, but who cares? If you own WFC, you're stoked. From 19 to 20 to 23 in a couple of days?

The Oracle still loving his WFC

He's consistent, if anything.

I gave up my WFC shares several weeks ago. Yeah, bought in around 14, sold around 14, and the very next morning, Wells Fargo surprised the world with an early earnings announcement that sent shares to 19 instantly.

Anyway, the reason I bought the shares in the first place was that Warren Buffett was very bullish on WFC, that it would handle its derivatives well and profit enormously from them. As of yesterday, he's saying the same thing, though his Berkshire Hathaway shares are running red recently.

I'm not about to get into WFC again, but the way Buffett hypes WFC and USB, it's hard not to think twice and do a little homework at the very least.

Buffett's breakfast blast

Before I lose it, here's the link to his sitdown on CNBC Monday: Buffett's breakfast blast

I didn't read it until Wednesday. Amazing, what he's saying about toxic assets. It's opposite of what the general media have been writing. His words, along with President Obama's confidence, have helped turn the market around the past three days.

Strangely (and stupidly) enough, all of Buffett's upside perspective didn't register with me in terms of Wells Fargo (WFC). I never once thought to study it. Sure enough, WFC is another financial soaring higher. WFC traded below 10 on Monday. By Wednesday, while I read Buffett, it was still at 12. WFC closed today (Thursday) at 13.95.

He talked openly about Wells Fargo and the spreads and the way toxic assets are probably the institution's best assets. It was kind of shocking to hear for us mere mortals. WFC is still far off its one-year high (44).

Fed throws lifeline to the market

Warren Buffet says he pays no mind, no attention to rate cuts. He buys a stock because of fundamentals. He has trust issues when it comes to his money, his clients' money, so he seems to visit every Co that he invests in. His approach seems to work pretty well for him. For the rest of us, today's tweaking by the Fed is welcome and wanted.

Fed Teams With Central Banks on Credit

Sure, it would be nice to buy furniture stocks and kick back with a burger and milkshake in beautiful, peaceful Omaha. But even Mr. Buffet has said that if he had a much smaller ship to steer, he would take on a bit more risk and collect much more reward. Would he buy RIMM and AAPL? Probably not. Even with his friendship with Bill Gates, Buffet isn't much of a tech fan.

Maybe someone should get him a Wii for Christmas.

Apple is smokin' hot, up 3% to 194+. RIMM, sorta hot, up 1.5% to 99+. Hate to admit it, but RIMM is dead money until the big boys get back in. On the positive side, only eight more days until RIMM earnings is out.
