Machines rule earth

7:44 am (Hawaii) I woke up early enough to get out of DGP at 47.74, taking a small loss (-0.46/share) on a weird open. I was totally worn out by this cold and sleep debt though, and crashed out until now. The indices are up and strangely enough, internet/social stocks started poorly and spiked after that roughly 30 minutes in. YELP, for example, sank to 16+ but rose to 20 or so.

FB is down 9% to 34.79, but it was at 33 earlier. AAPL is up 4.4$ to 553. It hit a recent low of 521+ on Friday and closed that day at 530. FAS is up 2.6% though JPM is down 2.7%.

Strange day, indeed. DGP has drifted, still red, now at 48.00. The G8 effect has been minimal, did little to help bulls or bears. gold bugs or bank haters.

Volume is weak. AAPL volume is at 15M+ shares; it was at 26M+ on Friday.

The machines are in control. Again. I suppose this is the one thing that was generally agreed upon at Camp David over the weekend. It feels like melt-up time again.

Tarnished gold?

Gold finished higher today while silver got axed. But gold was downgraded today by HSBC, which means they're lying and actually hoarding paper and physical gold for the next few days, or they really don't think QE3 will be QE3.

Here's what MarketWatch had to say about the lowered forecast.

Gold will never go out of style. But it's still a market, and it's still about buy low, sell high.

Dabbling and babbling

Took a ride on FAZ Wednesday, jumping in at 21.75, only to be stopped out at 21.65. Why use stops? If you're asking that question, you may not realize how dangerous FAZ (and FAS) can be. These 3x poltergeist monsters can make or break an account in minutes, even seconds. (There was a day years ago when I made 4k and lost 4k in premarket on FAS. That's what a quick trip to the toilet cost me on that wild morning, but it was a lesson well learned.)

Got back in today at 22.29 and placed a stop at 21.89 before I left home for a journey. FAZ eventually dropped to 21.95 before closing at 22.06, so my position is still in play. I don't feel any certainty about this trade. LaGarde is begging for more invisible fiat currency to be printed, and it could happen overnight. Or it could drag out through the France presidential elections later this month and in May. Bernanke has already said, at least for show, that the US will not save the Euro. I don't believe him, but that's what's on the table for now.

The low volume in Wednesday's rally was a convincing factor for me. And financials are not rallying even as they "beat" earnings estimates. Everything's baked in, and the retail trader has no interest in buying anything that's bloated or overbought, even at low 14x earnings levels (AAPL).

But when AAPL gets to my target of 546 (Fibonacci retrace from the 396 level late last year), I'll be itching to get in. While the rest of the planet earth crumbles, every last consumer will trade in whatever he or she can just to have an iPad and/or iPhone 5. By then, I'll be out of FAZ, long before (hopefully) the US and Europe are printing cyberbucks for nothing.

in & out

5:49 am (Hawaii) In DGP before the end of after hours trading yesterday at 63.63. Sold at 64.62 this morning. Just got up a few minutes ago, missed the mini-run to 65+, but a little profit is fine with me before the day ends. Just not willing to be in a position over the weekend, especially PMs, with a Brit holiday on Monday and the threat of more margin requirement hikes in gold.

I'd rather wait it out, let the margin hikes hit spot price (even if there's no hike, the effect could be the same) and get a far better price.

Brother Turd Ferguson has been spot on of late with his outlook in PMs. A master, really. He could be wrong from time to time, but his perspective on the day-to-day is captivating. Indices are up modestly (0.8% to 1.6%). No reason to expect QE3 from the Helicopter later today but who knows how that turns out. Heading back to bed for now.

GSVC is above 17 now on yesterday's news of investment in Twitter. It's nearing that 19+ top. FAZ is down more than 1% though most banks on my Debt Spiral list are in red.

Update 6:06 am Okay I totally missed Bernanke's speech. Dow was -220 and I didn't know it. It was a 1-minute chart of AAPL that got my attention. (My TV is off and is staying off for now.) AAPL shot from 372 to 381 at roughly 10:15 am Eastern. It didn't make a difference for me. I still wanted out of DGP at some point today. But it explains how DGP ran to 65.50 or so.

With no pronouncements or hints of a formalized QE3 or hidden facsimile, it's fine to be in cash.

Update 8:34 am DGP ran to 66.50 or so. Nice run by gold (1806) and silver. Both are running higher with the indices, which I didn't expect. That won't last forever.

Game Plan Redux

9:43 am (Hawaii) Now that I'm back to cash, what to do? My gut says stay put and see how things unfold leading into and right through Jackson Hole on Friday. Doing less will be doing more. So I remain bullish on physical gold and silver. I have all my coins superglued to my arms, legs, basically my extremities. Not really. But you get the idea.

I. Long/bullish physical PMs.
II. Cash, no equities.
III. Possibly will go short PM paper via ZSL, DZZ.
IV. Pending more Eurocrash news, short banks via FAZ.
V. By Friday (Jackson Hole), prepared to go long via QQQ, AAPL, BIDU, FAS.
VI. After QE3 momentum slows to a halt, riding DGP again. Maybe AGQ.

It'll be interesting to see, if Bernanke speaketh quantitative easing on Friday, how the miners do. They usually trade in tandem with the market, but this could be different. Maybe. I won't touch miners anymore, but I'm watching for entertainment value.

If BB does speaketh of QE3 Friday, I give it a week max of a rocket ride for the market. But it could fizzle out much sooner, maybe even in hours. Maybe on news that SocGen falters, triggering a domino effect across the continent. It's coming. Just a matter of time.

Like nothing ever changed

7:57 am (Hawaii) Just closed your eyes, breathe deeply and this could be a month ago, a season ago. LULU up 10%. GMCR up 9.4%. BIDU up 6%. NFLX, oh, Netflix, up 5.5%. AAPL up 2.5%. Just beautiful, mindless moves higher. YOKU up 5.1%. GOOG 3.5% higher. The effect of free monopoly money, printed to no end by Helicopter Ben.

Problem is, the market is up today without provocation. It was due for a bounce in the midst of this 2 or 3 week slow-motion crash. Gold is down into the 1860 area after flirting with 1915 or so overnight. Silver has backed up to 42.50 after visiting 44.00 again. All natural, as they say. I don't suspect CME mafia involvement this time. It feels like normal profit-taking. Come on. AAPL shouldn't be below 350 anyway. It's up more than $10 to 366+.

When Helicopter Ben alludes to any form of QE3 on Friday, the indices will race higher than today's gains (DJ +1.8%, Nas +2.5%, S&P +1.8%). It could be good for 1,000 points on the S&P 500 (currently 1,142). But there probably won't be another run like QE2. The general public is past the point of fantastical whims and lies. More people know the fractional reserve banking system is the real bubble. Video of riots in major cities across the globe do not lie. So I expect plenty of turbulence and roller coaster action.

I'm trying to leave my modest position in DGP alone, whether it hovers near its high (72.25) or today's low (69.15). I got up around 7 am Hawaii time, so it was much too late to ride today's momentum on the bullish route. Keeping my eyes on AAPL, FAS, DZZ, ZSL. Also QQQ, BIDU. More than likely I do nothing. With DJ up 180 points, maybe it catches fire into the close, or maybe it fizzles a little.

Update 8:08 am CNBC reporting that an earthquake hit Virginia and was felt as far as headquarters up near New York City and far west as Detroit. Market remains near its highs for today. It was a 6.0 quake.

Efficiency vs Frequency

11:00 am Lame. I entered FAZ at 69.35 and stopped myself out at 68.40. It's at 69.38 after hours. I've had some profitable trades in FAZ, but more and more, I just end up clipping myself out with break-evens or small losses. Today was a series of silly attempts to chase FAZ even though I had a specific price level (67.50) in mind. I was unwilling to buy AGQ below 229 and add DGP below 69. AGQ is now 242.52 and DGP is 69.22, both holding most of their gains and then some. So why chase FAZ? That's something I need to just avoid, period, by sticking to price points. It's the simplest, most efficient way for me. Technicals and trend lines are all great, but when I have stuck by targets, I've done far better overall by staying out rather than chasing.

What threw me off, in hindsight, was seeing FAZ drop all the way to 63.00. Had my doubts — emotion — after that even as it rose back to 67 and 68. Instead of a discounted price, I paid higher, logic losing out to emotion.

Long term, I'd be better served, in all probability, by not trying to trade in and out of these vehicles intraday. Example: The Fed could unveil some new form of QE on Sunday night and spark a bull run. FAZ could tank back to 55, even 45. But as we saw recently, every dead cat bounce is sold off. FAZ would eventually return to 70 and then 80, and then 100.

It might be time for me to adjust time frames and shoot for longer swings rather than quick putts. Or just limit quick momo trades to days when there is a major catalyst, like Euro bank destruction.

Adjusted game plan
I. Longer-term holds: physical PMs.
II. Short-term holds: gold and/or silver ETFs.
III. Quick trades: FAZ (on debt crisis headlines), FAS (if and when QE3 is announced), TVIX (on major riot headlines).

I've been 50% to 100% cash for most of this year.

I probably won't bother with FAS and TVIX since I'm asleep through a good portion of the session on most days.

As for today, it was good to be disciplined when the vehicles on my radar gapped up. Not good to avoid them as they dipped. I'm going to examine why I sometimes refuse to buy low and sometimes prefer to buy HIGH.

Phil Town is a master of that. He entered AAPL back in 2009 at 80 or so, precisely calling a bottom in what had been a devastating correction. AAPL has pulled back during the current pullback from 400+ to 356, but I'd say Town has done fairly well.

The only things I can see making a run similar to that are physical gold, physical silver, DGP, AGQ. Maybe FAZ. The AGQ/spot silver relationship is still on my mind. When silver went from 40 to 49+, AGQ went from 220 to 382. That's a 74% gain in AGQ and roughly 25% in spot silver.

Today, silver gained roughly 5.2%. AGQ is up 10.3%. There's reason to believe AGQ is worth trading to net more dollars and buy more physical — much more — even with spot price eventually at 50.

So that's FAZ which I am convinced will hit 100 (while bouncing all over like a pinball). There's AGQ which I have to say will bust through 300 and possibly 400 because spot silver at 50 is a high probability.

Of course, there's DGP. This is proof that ignorance can be costly. Just a year or two ago, I had no clue about real money, sound money, historical money. I viewed gold as a rich man's hoard, something heiresses and gold-digging hotties cared about. Something only a richass rapper could afford. Turns out they were all wiser than me. The instinctive attraction to gold is almost embedded in our DNA. It is internationally understood. Wave some bars of gold around wherever you are in the world, and 99.9% of people won't need to understand a word you say.

It'll be weird one day to see gold out of favor again, when the 30-year cycle turns over, as Mike Maloney points out in his book. If enough gold and silver can transform into farmland and a home, and provide ample resources completely independent of the grid, it's all anyone can ask for.

Dancing with Bears on Thin Ice

Jamie Edmondson

6:59 am (Hawaii) Up at 6 am or so, no alarm as usual. Not ideal, but this is life in the middle of the Pacific. I'm all cash so there was no imperative, no catalyst to anticipate. Howevuh ...

Gold and silver are up just slightly. So are the indices. Volume is quite low. Traders are out of the market, or at best just dipping their toes in. Does it make sense to chase DGP here (62.77), up 0.8%, making a run in the past several minutes? There's some fear with the heads of Germany and Italy France meeting tomorrow. FAS was up almost 6% when I got up. Now it's up 7%.

Staying nimble and light on my feet here. I agree with the bears, but this is not the time to go dancing with them, not with the ice still thin. Maybe QE3 is already underway. But maybe the market has already factored that in. Maybe the effect of QE3 is not going to be euphoria and a parabolic, bullish rise. Maybe the effect will be mixed and the market goes flat ... then declines.

Debt is the new four-letter word. When the bulls are dancing on that thin ice, maybe that's when it's time to ride the bears.

Update 8:02 am (Hawaii) DGP now 63.33, up 1.7%. Looking for an entry point, but the higher it goes, the more uncomfortable it gets. FAS also higher, 15.14 (+7.6%). Can bank stocks and gold go up in tandem? Maybe just today.

Update 10:35 am (Hawaii) Started a new position in DGP at 63.52 before the bell. No sense nitpicking over a few pennies; it's at 63.47 after hours. Volume was weak across the board today, so this is a scale-in move that I'm willing to ride or down 50 cents or more. I sold this last week at 63.25 when the environment (post-margin hike) seemed unhealthy. Things are better at this point, but never perfect.

FAS is 15.27 after hours. Market is up in the 2% range (DJ +1.9%, Nas +1.9%, S&P +2.2%), but again, on light volume. If and when the meeting between France and Germany tomorrow goes well, bankster stocks will surge. If it goes poorly, elephants break through the ice and the market tanks. Catalysts are crazy, but the are unavoidable.

Tuesday evening cinema & library (updated 2 am HST)

Waikiki

12:00 pm (Hawaii) He's right about this.

Cramer: Bernanke just shot Treasury bonds in the back of the head, making equities the most attractive place to go. He guaranteed that CDs won't keep pace with the rate of inflation.

Update 1:40 pm (Hawaii) Really tempted to start scaling into AAPL and/or add to DGP. I had this dilemma yesterday with DGP at 60.27 and opted to not add. DGP now at 63.25 as Asia trading begins. Asia has been big on gold lately while price comes down stateside, though hardly enough to stop this gargantuan run.

I won't mind staying put here and saving some powder for tomorrow, but the possibility of Bernanke staying quiet for 17 more days (Jackson Hole) could permit upside momentum to go wild. There's also the possibility that further chaos in Euro and/or US banks could lead to another series of crashes. For now, the momo is rising, so ... then again, the robot space alien machines put the turbo boost into final hour of trading. These evil machines could easily take the market back into the red before the opening bell tomorrow.

It's a maddening environment. I'd like to run my fingers through a treasure chest of shiny gold coins and be done with the lunacy.

My Regular watch list is 84% green going into the close of after hours trading. Metals list is 72% green. Volume is fairly strong across the board. Machines?

Update 2:00 pm (Hawaii) Scott Nations: "Our markets cannot rally as long as a bunch of people think they're better off holding gold."

Really? I'm in favor of both: ride the market up or down, and accumulate physical gold and silver.

Just opened a medium position in AAPL (at 375.45) and added more DGP (at 63.40), both before the close of after hours trading. Spot gold is at $1,763.60/oz. Basically, it's the angel price of Jim Sinclair. That's not why I'm adding here, though. If the market tanks, gold will protect. If the market rises, Asia has proven enough that it will continue to keep gold moving forward and higher. The debt crises of the US and Europe (and soon, the real estate bubble of China) are all intact.

Fucking beats losing to inflation every day.

Update 2:15 pm (Hawaii) Liesman (CNBC): Pegging the date (mid-2013) makes this Fed move more powerful than QE2 was.

Anybody believe him?
